Fastener profile comparison, large head reproduction part on the left, next to original part. Two none original Dzus parts on the right.

Alternative genuine Dzus Fastener for TR2-3A Windscreen pillar to body. Shorter than the standard part by 1.3mm

During August 2017 we became aware that the head of some reproduction items sold as 554720 is too big. As the head sits in a recess in the stanchion these incorrectly made Dzus fasteners will sit proud and might require excessive force to close them. This may result in the cam legs of the fastener breaking off where they engage with the spring. This is especially likely on the parts we have seen where the material is so weak that the cam ends of the fastener simply break off.

The correct parts have a head diameter (measured on Neil Revington's TR2, the fasteners are original Dzus and have not been changes in 40 years) of 17.5mm. some reproductions measure 18.8mm

See the photograph which shows the two sizes and a new, broken part subjected to excessive force.

The part listed here is a genuine Dzus part that will do the job. We stock two parts. Both have a slightly smaller head (15.88mm - 5/8") than the standard TR part (better than too big) one is the correct length and the other is slightly shorter (1.3mm) which may be useful in some circumstances where the spring wire retainer has already been bent outwards by ill fitting fasteners. The two part number we keep are 554720-2 (this part) which is 1.3mm shorter than the original part and is made from stainless steel. The other, 554720-1 shown below in related parts is the correct length and made from the correct steel and has a Bright Zinc Plate ( BZP) finish.

Whilst not exactly correct to the original specification these parts will do the job nicely and are made from original specification strong material by the original manufacturers, Dzus.

If you choose to use these parts you will need to also be aware of the following: -

The shaft design as can be seen in the photograph is different to the original part in that is has a waist and is missing the shoulder that retains the washer. Consequently you cannot use the retaining washer which keeps the fastener attached to the windscreen when the fasteners are undone.  The ejection spring can be used, so customers need to be careful when the fasteners are undone to ensure they do not spring away to a dark hole never to be seen again. A small consideration for something that works correctly.
