This catch, fitted to the bonnet of TR5, 250 and TR6 engages with the securing bracket on the bulkhead to keep the bonnet shut. The catch incorporates a safety hook.
This hook is attached to the main bracket by a pin which is peened or thumped on the other side of the bracket to keep it in place. This is not a particularly strong Triumph design and care should be taken when shutting the bonnet to avoid bending the safety catch and overtly stressing the pivot pin.

Technical Tip
Most failures of the safety hook are owner induced. We see repeatedly in our workshops the safety catch bent away from the loop it is intended to engage with. This results in repeated bending back to the right place which will inevitably weaken the pivot point. It follows then that if the peening is anything other than super robust, it can fall apart. Bear in mind that the catch should never actually do anything as it is only there as a back up device so the pivot should never be under stress. What happens is that some owners who might not be fully in tune with the fragility of their classic car seem to be under the impression that they can simply drop the bonnet as they can with their modern car. This in not the case with a TR4-6, the bonnet should be lowered gently, with the safety catch pulled out of the way, checking it is engaged properly with its loop then the bonnet can be fastened by pushing the bonnet down directly above the catch. If this advice is not followed the safety catch may well be misaligned when the bonnet is dropped resulting in the catch being bent out of shape.
We have seen them bent side way, doubled over, bent forwards, backwards in fact in any position other than where they should be, so the message is that with care, following the advice above, the catch will give years of service, if abused it is likely to fall apart.
