New TR4 Steering Rack LHD Ally clamp type to CT20265 vertical mounting. Total length 1023mm. RHD is part no. 305648. This new rack to standard specification gives 3.125 turns lock to lock.

Consider replacing your old aluminium clamps with our complete Aluminium Rack Mounting Kit RTR3007K, see below. A general fitting instruction is provided to ensure a satisfactory fitment.
Note: When new racks are not available exchange racks are supplied using part number 305647EX.

Notes on TR4 Early Racks and their Locating Holes

Customers should note that we have left out the two small holes that are to be found either end of an original early TR4 rack tube. These holes accommodated a small aluminium location button that also located in the solid aluminium clamps. We believe that Triumph utilised this button to speed up assembly on the production line. Over the years we have seen instances of this button having tipped when the rack has moved, possibly under the action of clipping a curb. Once tipped the button can foul the internal rack bar, causing stiff steering, and potentially creating unwanted swarf. It is the clamping action in service of the aluminium blocks over the rack tube that provides all the necessary location.

With this in mind we advise against the use of location pins and recommend customers leave them out and take care in orientating the rack so that the pinion is correctly aligned with the steering shaft.

It is worth noting that aluminium clamps have been used in competition applications for many years on later TR4, 4A and 6 racks as some of these rack tubes have no location holes, clearly location buttons cannot be used. Through out the world there are probably 1000s of cars which have used the modification and have suffered no adverse consequences, this further supports our view that the button is unnecessary.

Initial inspection and fitting

Please do be aware that the steering will seem stiff to start with, this should not be a surprise as the steering rack is brand new and will certainly appear stiff compared with the previous steering system which is likely to have covered many tens of thousands of miles and is being replaces because the old system was worn out and probably sloppy. Customer experience tells us that the steering will ease up after 100 miles or so and that when two to three hundred miles have been covered the  rack will seem to have bedded in nicely.


Each user will have a different opinion about what is acceptable in terms force required to turn the steering wheel, however before deciding something needs to be done about the steering rack, it is important to ensure the swivel components in the suspension are not causing the problem. We have created a Technical Instruction which shows how the steering rack can be adjusted to reduce the torque required to turn the pinion. This should, after adequate running in, never be necessary but is offered should a user feel it is something they wish to do.
