Right hand Beta Door Skin fibreglass. This right Hand Door Skin is a fibreglass version of the original TR3A skin wider at the front to match the front wings of the wider track prototype Triumph Beta. These prototypes came about as a result of Triumph's usual problem of lack of cash when an

option to use the wider track TR4 style chassis with a modified TR3A body shell was explored. This prototype programme was called BETA. See below in 'BETA' Background for more information on these prototypes.

Revington TR have reproduced these wing sets and door skins so that customers wanting to use the wider TR4 chassis can do so. The cockpit space is of course the same. The parts are a direct fit onto a standard TR2-3B body shell without the need for inner wing modifications although the sill will need to be brought out at the front edge to line up with the doors and front wings. Beta front wings are much more bulbous than standard TR2-3B wings as they have to accommodate the TR4 front track which is 4" wider than the TR2-3B. The line of the outer edge of the front wing needs to taper back to meet the back of the door swage line. This means that as the wing is 2" wider than standard directly above the front wheel, the wing is also slightly wider where it meets the door by 20mm. This then requires a wider door skin (see below in related products) and for the front edge of the sill to be brought out by 20mm. See 'Sill Alterations' below for guidance on how to achieve this. 
 
These fibreglass door skins are usually kept in stock however id we need to some made they will be subject to a lead time to delivery.
 
These door skins have been developed to mate with our Beta front wings. The fact that the skin is fibreglass means that it will need to be glued with modern automotive adhesive to the door frame.  skin is wider than standard at the front where it mates with the front wing and tapers to mate with a standard quarter panel. The door will need to have the original skin removed and the frame altered so that it is 20mm wider at the front. the following may be helpful.

Four separate types of door were used on the TR2-3B range of cars as follows: -
900491/2 TR2 Commission numbers TS1-TS4001. Long door where the door skin covers the inner sill and no outer sill panel is fitted

As the Beta prototype existed at the end of TR3A production only one skin is relevant; the short door with a door handle plinth. However as the fibreglass version of our door skin is usually used on race cars, the door handle plinth is not important and is therefore omitted from our door skin. This can easily be added by gluing a suitable piece of material in place.
 
You can alter your door frame as detailed below or we can supply a second hand door for you to repair and alter. None of these doors are available new however we do keep a large selection of second hand doors under the parts numbers 850113SH and 850114SH. Please note that we keep ALL types of doors under these part numbers and will ensure you get the right part at the time of purchase.

To alter the door frame, with the door skin removed, the front edge of the frame needs to be brought out from the swage line (not above it) down to the base of the door and this extra width tapered in the base of the door from 20mm at the front to nothing at the back. The 20mm figure is a guide and should be adjust at the top of the door to the bottom to ensure best fit with the wing and sill. 

Due to the huge variation in build standard between TR2 and TR3B and many subsequent rebuilds, some time will need to be spent with a reasonable level of expertise required, to ensure a perfect fit.

'BETA' Background
There were two development cars code named BETA, one red one black. The black car is owned by Neil Revington. They were used variously in left hand drive and right hand drive form and from time to time sported amongst other things different rear bumper and grill arrangements. These development cars represented a serious attempt by the factory to combine the old TR3A body with the new TR4 chassis at a time when Triumph could not afford the tooling for the TR4 body shells. We believe Triumph had a large quantity of the new TR4 chassis available therefore the Beta idea would have been a logical progression from the TR3A to give the car a much needed refresh in looks and performance. With the benefit of the wider track TR4 chassis, rack and pinion steering, an all synchromesh gearbox, improved seats and the light TR3A body, the car is easier to drive and has significant performance over a standard TR3A or TR4.
When Leyland took over Triumph, the money for the TR4 body shell tooling was immediately available so the Beta project was dropped and the TR4 programme moved ahead once more. The whereabouts of the red Beta is unclear but the black car is currently undergoing restoration at Revington TR.
 
 
Sill Alterations 
As the rear edge of the beta front wing where it meets the door in 20mm further out than standard, a modified door is required (see Beta door skins below for details) also the front edge of the sill needs to be brought out by 20mm too. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. the following options will all achieve the desired result: -
  • Slice through the top and the bottom of the outer sill near the flange almost all the way to the back leaving a small amount of metal untouched at the rear to act as a hing. Once the sill has been brought out to meet the wing and the door, introduce a fillet of steel tapering from 20mm to nothing to fill the gap. This would usually only be an option if the sills were either new or in exceptional condition.
  • Purchase a new pair of standard steel sills 850037 and 850038. knock flat the upper and lower edges that attach to the inner sill and weld on additional material. Re-edge the sill so that it tapers from 20mm (or whatever dimension suits your car) wider at the front to the standard dimension a the back. 
  • Purchase a purpose made pair of Beta sills in aluminium that are made with the extra 20mm of width at the front tapering to nothing a the back. This is a very expensive option as the aluminium sills are hand made to special order. We do not make steel sills as the option above to modify standard steel sills is far more cost effective.
