This is a hardened taper pin holding the fork to the cross shaft. This help overcome the frequent failure of this pin.

Revington TR recommend drilling through the fork, through the shaft and out the other side and installing a hardened roll pin (part number RPS230331) as a back up to the taper pin 158777HD. See below. Failure in this area can lead to the fork not being positivly located and will prevent disengagement of the clutch.
