The TR4 s gestation was slowed by too many ambitious plans that ultimately proved to be distractions, the most obvious being the Sabrina twin-cam TRS, which was originally to have been the basis for Triumph s new sports car.
When finally launched in 1961, the TR4 used a modified version of the TR3s well proven 88 inch wheelbase chassis, but with a wider track, new rack and pinion steering, and the previously optional 147cc larger engine. Its smart new Michelotti designed body was much more civilised than its predecessor s and featured wind up windows, a very efficient fresh air ventilation system and Triumph s unique removable Surrey Top .
